Collecting Fabric

Writer: PS by handPS by hand

From the beginning, I've used different types of fabrics to print onto, therefore I knew, that for my degree piece, I had a strong ability when It comes to printing onto fabric. I decided to take this one step further. Instead of just printing on bought fabric, I put out an ad on Facebook in my local community in search of big bedsheets and other kinds of fabric. Coincidentally, all the responses I received were from women. This felt powerful to me as I felt that I was really connecting, and each person I visited was interested in what I was going to be making. It felt empowering that an art piece created to support women, was being aided by lots of women local to me. The reason I chose bedsheets was not only for the massive amount of fabric you get but also because bedsheets are used within a bedroom, which could be considered one person's vulnerable space. These are where mirrors normally lie and speaking from personal experience, that is the place where those daunting thoughts of one's body become stronger. Bedsheets are something you lie on, and your body is in full contact with these sheets the whole time, they are a vital instrument to the comfort of that vulnerable space. When you’re in bed, on top of these covers, your body naturally relaxes, it's in its judgment-free zone. When you’re asleep, you're naturally forming these rolls and positions you would not want the public to see. Bedsheets are there to protect the mattress, and I feel there is a sense of protection with the sheets. Following on from the idea of protection, when you’re younger, you use these fabrics as the key ingredient for one thing, a fort. Forts are considered, in a child's view, to be a safe space against what may be out there. This is linked with my idea of creating an accepting, comfortable and liberating space for the audience.
