Process of sculpture (Alginate)

Writer: PS by handPS by hand

My idea was to create small sculptures of sections of my body. But I wanted them to represent the photographs that I had taken with the aim of having that ambiguous view of not knowing exactly where it's been taken from.

The process of sculpture using alginate was straightforward. At the start, you need to create small squares out of a string-like fabric. From then you need to create the alginate. Firstly I grabbed a bowl into which I then poured the alginate powder. From there, I needed to ‘paint’ the alginate onto the parts I wanted to mould. So this involved getting my other half to use a paintbrush and layer the alginate on. It started setting incredibly quickly, so once set we moved on to the plaster. The plaster is created in the same way with water and the powder. Once mixed to the right consistency, it's time to start submerging the string sheets into It. After they’ve been covered in the plaster, they are then placed on top of the alginate to create a support. We layered these many times until the strong support was created. Then it was time to let it set.

After this, the plaster and alginate creation needed to be peeled off. Once peeled off, with a new batch of plaster, I applied a thick coat onto the alginate that was attached to my body, doing multiple layers so that it created a strong sculpture. Once I had waited for it to harden, I carefully peeled the alginate off the plaster. Once they were separated, I was left with a beautiful thin cast. After that, I used the brand Montana Gold Toffee and Cappuccino colours to spray skin tone onto them, using a combination of the darker toffee colour and light cappuccino colour to make shadows.
